Heels vs Barefoot Pole: Which Should You Start With?

Start barefoot — heels are a style choice you can add anytime after you have basic strength and control.

Barefoot (or grip socks) is the standard for beginner pole. It's safer while you build strength, balance, and technique.

Pole heels (typically 6–8 inch platform boots) add ankle articulation, lines, and a performance quality that many dancers love. Heels classes focus on flow, floorwork, and choreography rather than tricks.

There is no requirement to ever wear heels — plenty of advanced pole athletes never do. If heels are what excites you, look for a studio with dedicated heels classes and beginner-friendly heels foundations.
